Cat Training for Beginners: A Guide

For too long, cats have been incorrectly labeled as ‘untrainable.’ Independent, stubborn, and caring only about food and sleep, cats have had some of the worst PR of all pets.

But when you truly pay attention, it’s quite clear that our tiny felines are hunters, problem solvers, and extremely observant little things. When we give them the right guidance, they don’t just learn, they thrive!

Did you Know: Cat’s didn’t evolve to follow a leader, they evolved to solve problems alone. Unlike dogs, who look to humans for instructions, cats rely on their own memories and judgement. They’re amazing at forming mental maps, remembering things that worked before, and testing all different types of strategies until something makes sense to them. So don’t expect them to do something just because you told them to!

What Really Is Cat Training?

Cat training is teaching your cat how they can interact with the world around them in a way that is engaging and feels rewarding!

Punishment is extremely counterproductive in most animals, and especially cats. In lieu of punishment, modern cat training uses:

  • Play based training
  • Short, focused sessions
  • Choice and control
  • Positive reinforcement

Training often helps with:

  • Reducing boredom
  • Improving focus
  • Building confidence
  • Strengthening bonds
  • Promoting calm behaviour

It’s not only about tricks, it’s about communicating, in a language you both understand.

How, and Why Training Benefits Indoor Cats

Indoor life is much safer, but it comes with sacrifices; without appropriate ways to supplement them, it can lead to boredom and a multitude of issues. Without proper mental stimulation, cats may begin:

  • Overeating
  • Avoiding the litter box
  • Displaying signs of anxiety
  • Seeking attention in destructive ways

And at worst, health issues.

Training turns routines into enrichment. Your cat gets to:

  • Think
  • Explore
  • Solve
  • Move

Instead of just reacting to the world, they get to participate in it; crucial for animals that are both predator and prey.

Tools That Make Training Easy

You don’t need much to start:

  • High reward treat - like churu, or something your cat does not get regularly or outside of training sessions
  • Clicker
  • A calm, familiar environment

Training is bonding time, it’s not just work.

Getting Started

With cats that have never been exposed to training before, it’s important to start slow:

  • Pick a familiar, calm space, this gives your cat comfortable stability as they explore new ideas!
  • Keep sessions short, long sessions can cause frustration and/or boredom
  • Reward even the smallest progress, something as simple as your cat interacting with you while learning a trick can be huge progress!
  • End on success, keep things enjoyable for you and your cat

Remember that it doesn’t have to be perfect, and it often won’t be. Progress will be slow, so avoid frustration and celebrate any amount of progress.

Training Is a Relationship

The most beautiful thing about training isn’t the tricks, or even the behaviour change! It’s the relationship shift.

Your cat learns you can be predictable.

You learn how your cat communicates.

That’s where confidence begins to grow.
