Small Apartment, Happy Cats: Enrichment Ideas for Small Spaces
Living in a small apartment with multiple cats can feel like a challenge, but it doesn’t have to. In my 600 sq ft home with three cats, I’ve found ways to give each of them space, vertical paths, and enrichment while keeping my apartment functional and cozy. Here’s how you can do it too!
Make the Most of Vertical Space
Cats naturally like to climb and observe from above. Even if floor space is limited, you can always give them height!
Try:
- Cat trees around the apartment
- Shelves above and in furniture (TV, bookshelves)
- Window beds for sunny spots
Tip: Think of each vertical level as a 'territory zone' to reduce conflict and stress.
Create Social Hubs
Some spaces are shared, like the couch or a favourite chair. These become social hubs where your cats can relax together or near you.
- Leave one or two surfaces accessible for lounging
- Place soft blankets or small beds in these areas
- Rotate toys nearby to encourage playful interaction
Even in a small space, these shared zones help your cats feel included without taking over the entire apartment!
Hidden Spots Are Important
Cats need places to hide and feel secure. Some suggestions:
- Shelves or corners above furniture
- Covered cat beds and tunnels
- Behind or beside furniture
Note: Avoid spots where they might get stuck or unsafe. Controlled hiding spots reduce stress and keep your cats happier overall.
Enrichment Through Toys & Interactive Play
Even a small apartment can support a rich play environment!
- Rotate toys regularly to keep them novel
- Use puzzle feeders or treat dispensers
- Place toys near vertical structures to encourage climbing
This keeps energy levels balanced and prevents boredom induced mischief.
A Few Truths About Cats in Apartments
- Cats will naturally explore counters or cozy surfaces, and that’s okay if you supervise and maintain cleanliness
- You don’t need to fight every ‘off limits' spot; controlled freedom encourages well adjusted behaviour
- Every cat is different, some will prefer high vantage points, others like floor level cozy corners
Small apartments don’t have to mean small enrichment. By using vertical space, creating social hubs, offering hiding spots, and rotating toys, you can keep multiple cats happy, healthy, and calm, even in small spaces!
